Voiced velar fricative to Voiced labiodental fricative

The phonetic transformation from a voiced velar fricative (ɣ) to a voiced labiodental fricative (v) involves a significant shift in the place of articulation, moving the point of constriction from the velum at the back of the mouth to the labiodental region, involving the lower lip and upper teeth. This change is often conditioned by surrounding sounds, particularly rounded vowels, which can facilitate the labialization of the velar fricative.

Language Examples

ɣu→vu— Shift from ɣ to v before the rounded vowel /u/.
ɣ→v— As part of a historical chain shift, where earlier *k became ɣ, which then further developed into v or was lost.
ïɣ→uv— Shift of ɣ to v in vowel-consonant sequences, influenced by regressive rounding.
aɣ→ov— Shift of ɣ to v in vowel-consonant sequences, influenced by regressive rounding.
