Alveolar trill to Voiceless glottal fricative

The shift from the rhotic [r] to the glottal fricative [h] is a form of debuccalization or aspiration. It typically occurs when a strongly articulated trill or tap weakens, losing its oral contact point and leaving only the glottal friction. This is a defining feature of Caribbean Spanish and many Brazilian Portuguese dialects.

Language Examples

Puerto Rico [r]→[pwehto]— The trilled /r/ in the coda position is systematically aspirated.
carne→cahne
rato [r] (rat)→[ˈhatu]— The strong word-initial R has shifted to a glottal or uvular fricative in most of Brazil.
carro→[ˈkahu]
Thai /r/→Lao /h/— Lao lacks the rhotic /r/ found in Thai; reflexes of Thai /r/ are systematically realized as /h/ or deleted in Lao. E.g., Thai 'rang' (bell) [raŋ] → Lao 'hang' [haŋ]. This represents a historical loss of the rhotic distinct from Romance debuccalization.
