Close back rounded vowel to Mid central vowel

The reduction of [u] or its short variant [ʊ] to [ə] is a common form of vowel reduction in stress-timed languages. In these systems, vowels in unstressed positions lose their distinct quality, rounding, and duration, centralizing toward the neutral schwa.

Language Examples

support [ʊ]→[sə-]— Initial unstressed syllable reduces to schwa.
circus→[-kəs]— Final unstressed syllable reduces.
und [ʊ]→[ənt] / [n̩]— Weakening of function words in rapid speech.
/u/ in short unstressed syllable→[ə]— In Central Atlas Tamazight, short /u/ in unstressed syllables may reduce to the central schwa [ə], paralleling similar reductions of /a/ and /i/. Tashlhiyt Berber goes further: proto-Berber short /u/ in certain environments corresponds to lexical schwa or zero in Tashlhiyt, while Tamazight retains a lexical schwa where Tashlhiyt allows consonant syllabification.
