Near-open front unrounded vowel to Mid central vowel

The shift from the full vowel [æ] to the mid-central vowel [ə] (schwa) is a classic example of vowel reduction. In stress-timed languages like English, vowels in unstressed syllables lose their peripheral qualities and centralize.
