Palatalized voiced alveolar plosive to Voiced postalveolar affricate

Primary palatalization (iotation) of voiced alveolar stops results in their shift to postalveolar affricates. The voicing is preserved while the stop manner is enriched into an affricate, and the place of articulation retracts from the alveolar to the postalveolar region.

Language Examples

vodit' [vodʲitʲ]→vozhu [voʒu] (originally [vodʒu])— Slavic d/zh mutation often involves an intermediate affricate stage [dʒ] which frequently simplifies to [ʒ] in modern Russian.
Latin 'diurnus'→Italian 'giorno' [dʒ]— Initial Latin [dj] clusters regularly developed into voiced postalveolar affricates.
education [edju-]→[edʒu-]— Coalescence of /d/ + /j/ into /dʒ/, common in many dialects of English.
