Alveolar nasal to Palatal nasal

Nasal palatalization, the shift from the alveolar nasal [n] to the palatal nasal [ɲ], is a highly frequent phonetic process triggered by following high front vowels or the palatal glide [j]. This development is a hallmark of the transition from Latin to the Romance languages and is equally prominent in the Slavic linguistic landscape. It is also central to the slender/broad contrast in Goidelic languages.
