Velar nasal to Voiced alveolar affricate

Fronting and affrication of velar nasal [ŋ] to voiced alveolar affricate [dz]. This change requires two simultaneous articulatory shifts — coronal migration (velar → alveolar) and manner change (nasal → affricate) — making it one of the more typologically unusual consonant shifts. No fully direct ŋ→dz change is well-documented in a single conditioned environment; the most plausible pathway proceeds through palatalization before a front vowel or glide (ŋ → ɲ → ndʒ → dz) or through denasalization followed by fronting. A related and better-attested shift is ŋ→g via denasalization (Southern Min), with the alveolar step left incomplete.

Language Examples

Middle Chinese *ŋ- (velar nasal initial)→/g/ in Hokkien (denasalization step); further fronting to alveolar affricate not documented— In Southern Min, Middle Chinese velar nasal initials denasalized through prenasalized [ᵑg] to voiced velar stop /g/. This illustrates the denasalization half of the ŋ→dz pathway. The further fronting /g/→[dz] that would complete the change is not attested in this family; it would likely require an additional palatalization or coronal assimilation trigger.
