Alveolar trill to Voiceless postalveolar fricative

The shift from the rhotic [r] to the postalveolar fricative [ʃ] (or its retroflex counterpart [ʂ]) occurs through assibilation and sandhi assimilation. In languages with these shifts, the rhotic merges with a following sibilant to create a single postalveolar fricative.
