Voiceless alveolar fricative to Empty sound / Zero

The elision of [s] is a major feature of Romance phonology. It often follows a debuccalization path ([s] > [h] > [∅]), particularly in coda positions. In French, this historical loss is often marked by a circumflex accent on the preceding vowel.
