Mid central vowel to Close-mid front unrounded vowel

The shift from the neutral schwa [ə] to the mid-front vowel [e] (or its rounded/open-mid neighbors [ø/œ]) is a form of re-stressing or vowel restoration. It occurs when a previously unstressed or reduced syllable becomes prosodically prominent, forcing the speaker to move from the neutral 'rest' position of the tongue to a distinct front-vowel target.

Language Examples

le [lə] (the)→le [lø] / [œ]— Emphatic re-stressing of the 'e muet' results in a full mid-front rounded vowel.
pegar [pɨ] (to catch)→pego [pɛ/e] (I catch)— Morphological opening: the reduced central vowel 're-opens' to a full front vowel when the stress shifts onto it.
