Voiced postalveolar fricative to Voiceless postalveolar fricative

The devoicing of the voiced postalveolar fricative [ʒ] (zh) into the voiceless [ʃ] (sh) is a frequent phonetic process. It often occurs as a result of final-obstruent devoicing or regressive assimilation to adjacent voiceless consonants, driven by the aerodynamic difficulty of maintaining voicing during frication.

Language Examples

nozh [ʒ] (knife)→[noʂ] / [ʃ]— Final-obstruent devoicing: /ʒ/ is realized as voiceless word-finally.
luxury [ʒ]→[ˈlʌkʃəri]— Assimilation: /ʒ/ can become [ʃ] under the influence of the preceding voiceless [k].
