Nasalized close-mid front unrounded vowel to Open-mid front unrounded vowel

The denasalization of nasalized vowels, particularly front ones, is a common phonetic transformation. This process often involves the loss of nasal airflow, which can be accompanied by a lowering of the vowel's height, leading to a more open articulation.

Language Examples

ẽ→ɛ— In the historical phonology of French, nasal vowels underwent a process of lowering and denasalization. A close-mid front nasal vowel /ẽ/, if present at an earlier stage, would have tended to lower to an open-mid front nasal vowel /ɛ̃/. Subsequently, in contexts where the nasal consonant was lost, this /ɛ̃/ could denasalize to an oral open-mid front vowel /ɛ/. This reflects a general tendency for nasal vowels to lower upon denasalization.
