Alveolar nasal to Mid central vowel

The shift from the alveolar nasal [n] to the neutral schwa [ə] is a common historical and synchronic process involving syllabic nasals. When a nasal consonant becomes the nucleus of a syllable (due to the loss of surrounding vowels), it often develops a supporting epenthetic schwa to assist in articulation, or vocalizes entirely into a vowel in certain language branches.
